20,767 drug peddlers were arrested since May 18: PM

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 11, 2018 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said law enforcement agencies arrested 20,767 drug peddlers and exposed to trial since the current was launched in May this year.

“The ongoing anti-drug campaign seized huge quantum of illicit drugs, arms, ammunition and recovered and seized transports used for drug transportation,” she said while replying to a question from lawmaker AM Awal in the House.

Sheikh Hasina said police filed 15,333 cases related to illegal drugs and handed 20,767 accused over to court after arresting them in this regard since May 18.

She said punitive actions were taken against 1,289 others in different other drug related charges through mobile courts.

“Intelligence surveillance is underway on people suspected to be linked to militant, terrorist and anarchic activities alongside drug peddlers,” the premier said.

She said the Counter Terrorism and Trans-national Crime is conducting regular drive through collecting information about militants and terrorists.
