9 killed in landslide in northeastern India

NEW DELHI, July 11, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – Nine people were killed Wednesday
after being hit by landslide in India’s northeastern state of Manipur,
officials said.

The landslide triggered by rains struck at Tamenglong district
headquarters, about 161 km west of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.

“Nine people were killed today after landslide hit three places in
Tamenlong,” an official said. “So far we have retrieved seven bodies from the
debris.”

The landslide brought mud and buried the houses, thereby trapping the
inmates underneath the debris.

Following the incident locals and police rushed to the spot to carry out
rescue work and pull out the bodies.

Chief Minister of Manipur Nongthombam Biren Singh has expressed sadness
over the deaths.

“I am deeply saddened to know that nine precious lives were lost due to
landslide at three places in Tamenglong headquarters. Till now seven bodies
have been recovered and two bodies of children are not recovered,” a
statement issued by Singh reads.

He said the rescue operations were underway in the area.
