Inu for skill development to attain economic goal

DHAKA, July 10, 2018 (BSS) – Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu today laid emphasized on converting the huge population of the country into human resources by developing their skills to achieve targets of the county’s economic development.

“We have already been eligible for graduating from the Least Development Country (LDC) status to a developing nation. If we want to achieve another step of economic development towards the developed country, we have to develop skills of our people,” the minister said, addressing a workshop as the chief guest at NSDC secretariat here.

National Skills Development Council (NSDC) and Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the national news agency, jointly organized the workshop titled ‘Role of Journalists in Creating Public Awareness on Skills Development’ with NSDC Chief Executive Officer ABM Khorshed Alam in the chair.

BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad addressed the workshop as the special guest while NSDC Director Mohammad Rezaul Karim presented a keynote paper.

There is a challenge in Bangladesh on the way of progress as most of the people are unskilled, Inu said, adding, “But we have to convert the unskilled and semi-skilled manpower into skilled human resource to achieve the target of economic development”.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has formulated National Skill Development Policy 2011 and set up NSDC to make the skill development activities more dynamic, he said, adding that about 13,000 training centers are providing training to the people across the country.

He urged the mass media to make an information-bridge between the government and the people disseminating information on the government’s skill development initiatives.

The minister also urged the journalists to help the government in attaining the targets of skill development projects by identifying the obstacles in the job.

The minister underscored the need for ensuring good governance in the economic sector of the country and said financial abuses and corruption are taking place in the sector due to lack of good governance. There is also need of skilled manpower in the economic sector, he added.

Terming corruption as the main enemy of quality, skill and merit, he said lobbying for recruitment, promotion and transfer should be eliminated for the sake of the country’s development.

Addressing the workshop, Abul Kalam Azad said Bangladesh has implemented a lot of development schemes.

“If we can continue this development spree, we will be able to become a middle income country by 2021 and achieve the target of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before 2030,” he added.

Associate Professor of Dhaka University (DU) Mass Communication and Journalism Department Dr ASM Asaduzzaman, Deputy Director of Ganoshakkharata Avijan Tapan Kumar Dash and NSDC Deputy Director Napal Chandra Karmaker joined the function as discussants.

BSS Chief Reporter Ashequn Nabi Chowdhury conducted the workshop.
