700-coach, 140-locomotive to add BR fleet: Minister

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 10, 2018 (BSS) –Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque today said a process is underway to bring 700 broad and meter gauge passenger coaches, 100 meter and 40 broad gauge locomotives for Bangladesh Railway (BR) fleet.

“The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has brought 270 coaches and 46 locomotives and launched 117 new train services after assuming power,” he said this, while replying to a question from treasury bench member M Sanwar Hossain, on behalf of Muhibur Rahman Manik of Sunamganj-5 in the Jatiya Sangsad today.

The minister said a process is underway to bring 100 broad gauge coaches under the Padma Bridge Railway Connectivity Project.

He said the government would purchase 150 coaches for meter gauge line with finance from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of South Korea, 200 meter gauge coaches under Suppliers Credit method, 200 meter gauge and 50 broad gauge coaches by Asian Development Bank (ADB) finance.

The government has also been working to bring 100 meter gauge locomotives and 40 broad gauge locomotives for Bangladesh Railway, Mazibul Hoque informed the House.
