Three national professors honored by UGC

DHAKA, July 9, 2018 (BSS)- The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh today accorded a grand reception to three newly appointed national professors for their outstanding contributions to the education sector.

They are Professors Emeritus Dr Rafiqul Islam, Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman and Professors Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury. The reception was held at the UGC auditorium at Agargaon in the city.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid addressed the reception as the chief guest while UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan presided it.

Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division Md Sohrab Hossain, UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled, UGC members and officials of the Education ministry, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Anisuzzaman said, “I personally feel greatly honored as the UGC has formally accorded a reception to us. This is one of the most memorable moments of my life….. Because I got recognition from my own country and dedicated this honour to all people of the country.”

Prof Jamilur Reza said this initiative of UGC will encourage the entire nation to steer development process of the country. “I feel proud of such honour given to me by UGC. I urge the government to take more such initiative so that enlightened citizens of the country get inspired to do better for Bangladesh.”

Describing these three national professors as lighthouse of knowledge, Nahid said they (national professors) enlightened the nation through their extra-ordinary talent.

“I feel proud to honour these three great sons of the nation…. They are assets of the country. So, we have to provide opportunities so that they could contribute further to the education sector,” the minister added.

Nahid urged these three national professors to continue their intellectual pursuits to improve quality of education as it has been set as one of the main components to fulfill Sustainable Development Goal-4.

UGC Chairman said these eminent educationists have made their valuable contributions to different fields of development. The people should follow their footsteps to build an economically prosperous Bangladesh, he added.

On June 19, the government appointed these noted educationists as national professors for a five-year term.
