Dhaka’s winless run in Bangabandhu T20 Cup continues

DHAKA, Nov 30, 2020 (BSS) – Beximco Dhaka conceded their third straight defeat in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup after their 37-run loss to Gemcon Khulna at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Gemcon Khulna though was restricted to a moderate 146-8, their bowlers made it enough by bowling in disciplined way as Beximco Dhaka was wrapped up for 109 in 19.2 overs.

It was Khulna’s second victory in four games, taking them to the third position of the point table. Dhaka continued to languish at bottom table.

Shuvagata Hom and pacer Shahidul Islam grabbed three wickets apiece to lead the charge. Shakib Al Hasan who yet again failed with bat, contributed the team’s victory with cherry, finishing with a measly 4-2-8-1.

Shakib’s economical bowling stifled the innings and thereby created such a pressure that Dhaka couldn’t recover from it.

Though Shakib grabbed just one wicket, he took the key scalp of opener Naim Sheikh for 1, resisting Dhaka’s way to get off to a flying start,

Naim’s fellow opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim was bowled by Shuvagata Hom for 4 while one down batsman Robiul Islam Robi was trapped leg-before by Shahidul Islam for 4, leaving Dhaka in tricky 14-3.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Yasir Ali Rabbi tried to regain the control and looked well set but Hasan Mahmud dismissed the latter for 21, brining an end to the 57-run partnership.

Shuvagata Hom then blew Dhaka completely, removing Mushfiqur for 37.

After Mushfiqur’s dismissal, the rest of the batsmen of Dhaka just reduced the margin for the defeat.

Mushfiqur and Yasir Rabbi were the only two batsmen of
Dhaka to reach double digit figure while third best 15 runs came from sundries.

Fast bowler Rubel Hossain who claimed 3-28 was key in restricting Gemcon Khulna in paltry total.

Shafiqul Islam dazzled with 2-34 alongside Rubel, extending Khulna’s agony further after Mahmudullah Riyad and Shakib Al Hasan’s side was sent to bat first.

Khulna made a disastrous start, losing Anamul Haque Bijoy and Shakib Al Hasan who opened the innings, as the scoreboard read 19-2.

Rubel grabbed the prized scalp of Shakib for 11. Shafiqul then dismissed Jahurul Islam for 4, leaving Khulna further precarious 30-3.

Imrul Kayes and captain Mahmudullah Riyad shared a 56-run partnership to indicate a good finish but Dhaka bowlers regrouped well in the midst of the innings to take further control.

Nayeem Hasan provided the key breakthrough, taking out Kayes for 29.

Mahmudullah held together the innings but Rubel and company kept the things tight.

Mahmudullah was out for team’s highest 45 after Rubel removed him in the last over.

The captain’s 47 ball-innings was studded with three fours.
