Govt allocates Tk 40 crore for roads in Rohingya camps

DHAKA, Sept 20, 2017 (BSS) – The government has allocated Taka 40 crore for construction of roads in 12 temporary camps of Myanmar refugees in Cox’s Bazar as part of its massive programmes for the rehabilitation of the displaced people from Myanmar.

“The LGRD Ministry has allocated the money for construction of the roads in 12 makeshift refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar,” Prime Minister’s Office sources told BSS today.

Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan said apart from this, the government is constructing 1200 makeshift sanitary latrines and installing 1200 tube-wells in the 12 refugee camps.

He said 100 makeshift toilets — 60 for females and 40 for males — will be set up in each refugee camp.

“As many as 200 toilets have already been built in the 12 refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar and the rest of the toilets will be constructed within next 2/3 days,” he said.

Khokan said the coordination committee formed for rehabilitation of the Rohingya refugees sits every day in the PMO and takes necessary decisions in this regard.

The meeting is being held with PMO Director General (admin) Kabir Bin Anwar in the chair. “The (coordination) committee is informing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is now in New York to join the 72nd UNGA session, about its decision and the premier gives necessary directives in this regard and puts signatures on e-filing from the USA,” the PM’s deputy press secretary said.

He said 34 medical teams have been working in 12 refugee camps, while three medical centres will be set up in each shelter for providing healthcare services to the refugees.

As many as 14 makeshift warehouses near the newly built refugee camps will be constructed to preserve and store the relief materials.

Khokan said a media centre to inform the latest situation of the refugees and and the government activities will be opened in the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Cox’s Bazar soon.

Meanwhile, the government has taken a decision to distribute kerosene burner among the Myanmar refugees to protect environment and the forest of the adjoining areas.

On September 14, the government took massive programmes for rehabilitation of displaced people from Myanmar and coordination of relief works.

The programmes were taken at a meeting held in the PMO with PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury in the chair.

At the meeting, a coordination committee was formed to have a better coordination among the government agencies, development partners and international NGOs on relief and rehabilitation work.

As per the decisions of the meeting, 2000 acres of lands near Kutupalong area in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar will be used to build additional 14,000 shelters. Six families will be accommodated in each shelter.
