Shirin for awareness campaign to stop tobacco consumption
DHAKA, July 5, 2018 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today laid emphasis on launching awareness campaign across the
country to educate people about the harmful effect of tobacco consumption.
“Consumption of tobacco and tobacco products cause different killer
diseases……So, we have to create mass awareness among the people,” she
made the comments when an anti-tobacco alliance called on her at the latter’s
office here, an official release said.
The Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared to make
Bangladesh tobacco-free country by 2041 for building a healthy nation.
She urged the people to extend their cooperation to supplement the
efforts of the government to build a tobacco-free country.
In Bangladesh, at least 57 thousand people die each year from eight
tobacco related diseases. The rate of tobacco use in Bangladesh is one of the
highest in the world. More than 43 percent of the adult population use
tobacco in any form.
The anti-tobacco campaigners called upon the government to enforce the
anti-tobacco law strictly to stop all forms of promotional campaign on
tobacco and tobacco products aiming to protect the people from its harmful
effects.
