Govt to take steps soon to raise mushroom cultivation: Dr Razzaque

DHAKA, Oct 27, 2020 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur
Razzaque today said the government will take steps to exploit the
possibilities of mushroom cultivation soon as extension of its
cultivation will play a vital role in the economy.

“We will strengthen the mushroom development institute and
horticulture centers soon to discover new variety of mushroom as
popularity and extension its cultivation would contribute largely to
our economy”, he told a view-exchange meeting on online with mushroom
growers and entrepreneurs from ministry’s conference room here.

“Bangladesh has huge prospects of mushroom cultivation and we have
to utilize maximum potentiality of its cultivation, said the
minister.”

“Extension of mushroom cultivation and raising its popularity will
resolve country’s huge unemployment problem and play a significant
role in our economy”, he added.

The minister called for imparting training to the officials,
growers and entrepreneurs comprising mostly with small, marginal and
landless farmers on mushroom cultivation which would help to expand
its cultivation and create a local and international markets of the
cash crop.

Currently, the country is annually producing approximately 40,000
tonnes mushroom worth of Taka 800 crore, said the minister, adding
that Bangladesh has a scope to export mushroom in various countries in
the world.

Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE)
M Abdul Muyeed moderated the function while Agriculture Secretary M
Meshbahul Islam also joined the online programme.

Terming mushroom as a highly potential crop, Nirod Chandra Sarker,
deputy director of the Mushroom Development Institute, said the
mushroom is very potential crop in perspective of Bangladesh as no
arable land is needed to cultivate the most nutritious and delicious
crop.
