DHAKA, July 4, 2018 (BSS) – Farmers and traders in three mango mango producing districts – Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi and Natore – are profiting from bumper mango production this year, farmers and officials said.

Talking to BSS, many mango growers of the three districts said they are benefiting more from mango farming than any crop cultivation. They are easily nursing mango trees and are getting good yield, which eventually help them alleviate poverty.

Although almost the entire country, particularly the three districts, witnessed huge mango production this year, farmers and mango traders are making a good profit.

Md. Shahbul, a mango grower of Paik Para village of Natore district, said, “He has a mango orchard on three bighas of land. I am very much happy for good yielding of mango. Although prices of mango are lower than last year’s, I am hoping to sell mango to earn a handsome amount of money.”

Like Shahbul, many farmers of Natore, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts, they are benefiting a lot because of good mango production, saying huge mango yielding is making profit despite relatively low mango prices.

They said mango production increased two or three times this year as compared to any time in the past.

Mehedi Hasan, a mango trader of Paik Para village Natore district, said, “I am expecting good profit this year as mango production has increased remarkably….. I have already made good profit from my leased mango orchards.”

He said prices of popular varieties of mango including Gopalbhog, Khirshapat and Nengra were ranging between Taka 35 and 40 per KG during Ramadan and just after Eid-ul-Fitr.

Prices of same varieties of mango slightly fell in the past week, Mahedi Hasan said adding, “Now the average prices of a good variety of mango is Taka 30 per KG. We are hoping to increase prices of mango within a week.” Price of Fazli, the latest popular variety of mango, is now Taka 25, he said adding mango traders are getting good prices of Fazli.

Director General of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Mohammad Mohsin said, “Some 21,43,433 tonnes of mango were produced on 1,74,208 hectare of land this year in the country. This is the highest mango production compared to the past couple of years.”

“We are educating farmers on modern technique of mango production alongside providing technological know-how…. Now farmers are planting high-yielding varieties of mango developed by our agro scientists,” he said adding mango production is increasing almost every year as a result of adopting these initiatives.

He said farmers in Rajshahi, Natore and Chapainawabganj are benefiting from mango farming as they are getting good yield every year because of applying modern mango cultivation method.

Mohsin said mango production in the country has increased significantly as mango growers are more interested to cultivate mangoes because of its huge commercial prospects.
