No alternative to sports to keep adolescents away from decay: Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 9, 2020 (BSS) – Information Minister and Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Dr Hasan Mahmud today said that there is no alternative to sports to keep youth and adolescents away from social decay.

“We need to get our youth and adolescents out of their addiction to social media and its wave-based entertainment apps,” he added.

Dr Hasan said that boys of the new generation are no longer going to the field to play football.

“When we were little, we used to go to the field to play. Now the boys have to be forcibly sent to the field. In fact, there is no alternative to sports. So we have to organize sports. Chittagong Jilla Krira Sangstha (CJKS) has taken a good initiative,” he added.

The information minister as chief guest was inaugurating the ‘Mujib Hundred Years Celebration Football Tournament’, organized by CJKS on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary held at MA Aziz stadium.

SM Mehedi Hasan, Convener of Tournament Committee and Deputy Commissioner North of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), presided over the inaugural function while CJKS General Secretary and former Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Vice President of Chattogram Divisional Krira Sangstha Ali Abbas, among others, addressed the function.

Hasan said that the teenage and adolescent gangs are committing various crimes including rape, and one of the major ways to prevent them from the crime is to spread sports to every village.

Terming the spread of the sports as very necessary, the information minister said that “The way we have become shut in the Corona period, this stagnation cannot be maintained for long.”

“There is no substitute to sports to overcome this stagnation. I think it is necessary to organize the league game in Chattogram very soon,” he added.

Hassan said that the world has come to a standstill due to Corona, such tournament has not started yet anywhere in Bangladesh due to the virus.

“But life cannot remain stagnant for Corona. As we all have to deal with corona, both life and livelihood have to continue. In the same way, we have to continue playing sports that are closely associated with life. With that goal in mind, the first football tournament has started it’s journey during corona through CJKS in Bangladesh. That is why, I thank the CJKS,” he added.

Hasan said that many people here do not know that Bangabandhu himself used to play football.

“When Bangabandhu was a student of school, Bangabandhu’s father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman was the president of school managing committee. Then the team led by Bangabandhu played with the team of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman in Tungipara. He defeated his father’s team in that game,” Hasan said.

Member Secretary of the tournament committee Md Shahjahan conducted the inaugural function while CJKS vice presidents Abu Hasan Siddique, Ehsanul Haider Chowdhury Babul and Didurul Alam Chowdhury, joint secretaries Shahidul Islam and Moshiur Rahman, CJKS officials Wahid Siraj Swapan, among others, attended the inaugural function.
