DHAKA, July 3, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh today called upon the international community to recognize the genocide carried out in the country during the 1971 Liberation War.

Bangladesh Charge D’affairs and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Tareq Md Ariful Islam made the call at an open debate organized by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, said a press release here.

The debate was held on “The Responsibility to Protect and the Prevention of Genocides, Ethnic Cleansing, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity”.

About ethnic cleansing, Tareq mentioned the violence carried out against the Rohingya community which has created one of the biggest humanitarian catastrophes.

Islam expressed his optimism that the United Nations efforts in the Rakhine state of Myanmar will prevent recurrence of violence against the Rohingya community and it will help safe and dignified return of the Rohingyas who took refuge to Bangladesh fleeing the persecution in Rakhine.

The charge d’affairs also reiterated the proposal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to create a ‘safe zone’ in Rakhine for the protection of the Rohingya people.
