Pesticides Bill, 2018 passed in JS

SANGSAD BHABAN, July 2, 2018 (BSS) – The Jatiya Sangsad today passed the
Pesticides Bill, 2018 with a view to make rational use and quality control of
the pesticides for achieving food autarky through enhancing agricultural
productivity. Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury moved the bill in
the house with Deputy Speaker Md Fazley Rabbi Mia in the chair.

The House passed the bill with voice votes.

In the proposed bill, the agriculture minister said with a view to bring
all activities under the act, the proposed new bill was made annulling the
Pesticides Ordinance, 1971 which was promulgated for controlling the import,
production, selling, distribution, manufacturing and use of the pesticides
for the agriculture production and welfare of the people’s health care, she
said.

Piloting the bill, she said pesticides is a sensitive agricultural
ingredient, so its [pesticides] use increase the production of the crops in
one and appropriate application through controlling exorbitant use of the
ingredient is very important on the other.

In the proposed bill, Matia said registration of dealers, renewal of the
registration term, cancellation of the registration, to award license for
import and production of pesticides, license renewal, handover, cancellation,
etc.
