BARGUNA, Sept 21, 2020 (BSS) – The farmers are foreseeing bumper aus production this year in the district as harvesting of the crop nears completion.

The cultivation of aus, which contributes to country’s almost 7.5 per cent of the total rice production, has exceeded to 55525 hectares from the target of 55,000 hectares, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

Expressing satisfaction over paddy price, Abu Bakar, a farmer of Kalibari village under Amtali Upazila of the district, told BSS that the paddy on his land has already been harvested and he got comparatively better price this year by selling the paddy over Taka 900 per maund.

“I cultivated two varieties of Aus –BRRI-48 and BRRI-27 on 5 bighas of land and I am very happy to get bumper production,” said Karim Uddin, another farmer of Barguna Sadar upazila.

He, however, said the cyclonic storm which made landfall along the India and Bangladesh coastline on May 20 this year, could not do any damage to the aus crop as the crop was cultivated in March-April.

The farmers are happy over better aus production this year, said M Wadud, Deputy Director of the DAE here.
