GCA to be int’l milestone on climate adaptation: Momen

DHAKA, Sept 8, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today said the South Asian Regional Center of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Dhaka will be a milestone for international partnership in combating the adverse impacts of global climate change.

“A strong global commitments and efforts are needed on adaptation measures to cope with negative impacts of climate change,” he made the remarks at the virtual launching ceremony of the South Asian Regional Center of Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the GCA.

Former UN secretary general and GCA Chair Ban Ki-Moon and ministers from Bangladesh and other countries from the South Asia region joined the inaugural session virtually.

The foreign minister said that Bangladesh is ready to share her experience and best practices regarding adaptation and disaster management.

“After the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will build back our climate resilience much better by making transition to a green economy and investing in more decarbonization of the production methods and consumption,” he said.

The foreign minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had realised the adverse impacts of climate change long ago, and called for greater international cooperation to face the natural calamity in his very first speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974.

Momen said Bangladesh has already formulated 82-year-long “Delta Plan 2100” which is a living test case for all the deltas of the world.

He said a global initiative is required to bring a solution over the climate change issue. “Today’s inauguration of the GCA South Asia Regional Office in Dhaka is an important part of that collective (global) initiative,” he added.

Momen said that the GCA Bangladesh office together with the regional countries would promote locally developed nature-based sustainable solutions and innovative adaptation measures.

“We will create a Center of Excellence not only for the regional countries but also for the other regions of the world by sharing our best practices,” he said.

The foreign minister hoped that the CGA Bangladesh office will receive necessary support from the international development partners in its efforts to demonstrate climate resilience successes.
