Govt allocates 439.12 tonnes rice for Kaptai lake fishermen

DHAKA, Sept 8, 2020 (BSS) – The government has allocated 439.12 tonnes of rice for the fishermen as the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) enforced a ban on fishing in Kaptai lake on May 1 this year in order to boost breeding of fish.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has allocated the rice from the Vulnerable Feeding Group (VGF) programme, said a press release here today.

The allocation has been given for the 21,956 registered fishermen families of Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts, who could not net fish in July complying government’s ban.
Under the programme, each family will be given 20 kg of rice.

The Deputy Commissioners concerned have been asked from the ministry to complete the distribution of VGF rice within September 30, 2020, added the release.

Earlier, the government had provided 889.96 tonnes of VGF rice to 22,249 fishermen families for the months of May and June.
