Sunamganj science and technology university bill, 2020 places in JS

SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 7, 2020 (BSS) – The SunamganjUniversity of Science and Technology bill, 2020 was placed in the parliament with an objective to set up a new specialized science and technology university in the haor area.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni placed the bill in the JatiyaSangsad with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Placing the bill, the education minister said students from the backward haor and border areas will get higher education with the setting up of the specialized university.

The country has 42 public universities— with 17 general universities, 6 agriculture and veterinary and 19 science and technology, but 32 districts have no public universities. The number of private universities in the country is 105.

Ministry of Education (Secondary and Higher Education Department) has enacted the draft law on Sunamganj University of Science and Technology which was earlier approved by the government.

There are 55 sections in the draft law—with most important sections are the Chancellor in that section 9, Vice-Chancellor in Sections 10 to 11, Pro-Vice Chancellor in Section 12, Treasurer in Section 13, Syndicate 18 to 20.

There are issues related to the Academic Council Section 21 to 22, the Finance Committee Section 29 to 30.

The education minister urged the House to send the bill to the concerned parliamentary standing committee for further scrutinizing it within a month.
