Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1, advance to World Cup quarterfinals

DHAKA, July 01, 2018 (BSS)- Uruguay beat Portugal by  2-1  goals to move to the quarterfinal of the FIFA World Cup in the round of 16 match held on the early hour of Sunday at Sochi in Russia.

In the day’s match, Uruguay shot into lead in the seventh minutes of the play when Cavani brilliantly nodded home from Suarez’s cross from the left flank (1-0).

Defender Pepe restored the parity for Portugal in the 55th minutes when he too nodded home from a corner kick (1-1).

Cavani again showed his brilliance this time from the left flank he beat Portuguese goalkeeper with a thunderous shot (2-1) in the 62nd minutes of the proceedings.

Ronaldo was well guarded and  was not allowed to take any serious shots by the Uruguay defenders.

Uruguay will now play against France who earlier in the evening beat Argentina 4-3 in the quarterfinals scheduled to be held on July 6 at Nizhny Novgorod.

 Earlier, Uruguay topped Group A winning all three group matches. They beat Egypt by 1-0 goal in their group opening match, defeated Saudi Arabia by 1-0 goal in their second group match and banked Russia by 3-0 goals in their third and last group match.
On the other hand, Portugal finished group B runners-up. They played out to a 3-3 goal draw with Spain in tier group opening match and beat Morocco by 1-0 goals in their second group match. Portugal then played to a 1-1 goal with Iran in their third and last group match.
After day’s proceeding both Ronaldo and Messi will not be seen in this World Cup as their teams both Portugal and Argentina crashed out of the World Cup after respective defeats
