DHAKA, June 30, 2018 (BSS) – President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer arrived here today on a three-day visit to observe current situation of Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Around 700,000 Rohimgyas took shelter in Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine state since last August following the brutal military actions termed by UN as “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” by rights groups.

The ICRC president arrived here after concluding his visit Myanmar to see situation in Rakhine State.

He will go to Cox’s Bazaar tomorrow to see ICRC operational activities in the Rohingya camps there, ICRC Bangladesh spokesperson told BSS.

After coming from Cox’s Bazaar, Maurrer will hold meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He will also hold meeting with Foreign and Home affairs ministers, among others.

“Humanitarian organisations are doing their best to alleviate the suffering in very difficult circumstances, as the monsoon season advances. But 10 months on, too many people are still suffering too much, despite all the talking and all the efforts,” said Peter Maurer in a statement prior to his visit here.

“While the emergency response continues, there must be urgent progress – from humanitarians, development actors, and the authorities – on building sustainable solutions,” he added in the statement.
