63,408 piped-water supply sources to be set up in rural areas: LGRD minister

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 28, 2018 (BSS) –The government will set up
63,408 pure piped water supply sources across the country for mitigating
arsenic problem, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf
Hossain said today.

“The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) under the Local
Government Division will set up 63,408 piped-water supply sources under a
project titled — The Water Supply in the Rural Areas –,” he said while replying
to a written query from treasury bench member Nurunnabi Chowdhury
(Bhola-3) in the House.

In addition to this, he said, the re-excavation of 143 ponds and excavation of
200 ponds are underway under the project.

The minister said the re-excavation of 809 ponds by the District Councils is
going on at the field level. Solving the arsenic problem will be possible if the
project is completed,” he said.

Mosharraf said the government is implementing three schemes for ensuring
safe drinking water in poura areas across the country.

Under the projects, he said, 350 deep tube-wells, 1680-km pipe line, 58 water
purifiers and 2,582 hand-operated deep tube-wells will be installed.
