DHAKA, June 27, 2018 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today set July 3 to
hold hearing on BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s appeal against a lower
court order that convicted her in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and
Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order.

The ACC counsel today drew court’s attention to an order of the apex
court, which asked to dispose of the matter by July 31.

On May 16, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High
Court order that granted bail to Khaleda Zia in the case and rejected two
appeals against that order.

The apex court also directed the High Court to dispose of Khaleda’s
appeal by July 31.

On February 8 last, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 convicted Khaleda Zia
and sentenced her to five-year imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft
case. It also sentenced other five accused, including Khaleda’s elder son and
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, to 10-year imprisonment each.

The other accused are former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal,
businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and Khaleda’s nephew
Mominur Rahman.

Meanwhile, the ACC filed a plea with the concerned department of the
apex court, seeking review of its order that directed the High Court to
dispose of Khaleda’s appeal within July 31.
