Voting in Jashore-6, Bogura-1by-polls continues

DHAKA, July 14, 2020 (BSS) – The voting in the by-polls to Jashore-6 (Keshabpur) and Bogura-1 (Sonatola-Sariakhandi) constituencies continues since today morning amid corona virus pandemic.

The polling in those two constituencies begins at 9am and it will continue till 5pm.

The Election Commission (EC) completed all-out preparations for holding the by-polls.

As part of the preparation, movement of all type of vehicles including motor-bike has been suspended in the area of those two constituencies.

The general holiday has also been declared there on the vote.

“It is not necessary to submit fresh nomination for the by-polls in these two constituencies …the electoral process resumed after suspending the polls caused by corona virus pandemic,” said EC secretary M Alamgir.

On January 18, the Bogura-1 constituency fell vacant following ruling party lawmaker Abdul Manan died. The registered voters of the constituency are 3 lakh 30 thousand and 893.

The contesting candidates of by-polls to Bogura-1 constituency are Sahadara Mannan (Awami Legue), wife of late ruling party lawmaker Abdul Mannan, AKM Ahsanul Taiyab Zakir (BNP), Moksedul Alam (Jatiya Party), M Roni (Progatishil Ganotantrik Dal or PDP), Nazrul Islam (Bangladesh Khelafat Andolon) and Independent candidate Yasir Rahmatullah Intaj.

On January 21, the Jashore-6 constituency has been vacant after the death of Awami League leader and former State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadeque.

The registered voters of the constituency are 2 lakh 3 thousand and 18.

The contenders of the by-polls to this constituency are Awami League candidate Shahin Chaklader, BNP candidate Abul Hossen Azad and Jatiya Party candidate Habibur Rahman Habib.

The by-polls of the two constituencies were scheduled for March 29, but it was postponed due to the transmission of Coronavirus.

However, the EC is holding the by-polls today for constitutional obligation.

The constitutional dateline for holding election to Bogura-1 constituency is July 15 and July 18 for Jashore-6 constituency.
