New army chief calls on President

DHAKA, June 26, 2018 (BSS) – Newly appointed Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed paid a courtesy call on President M Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban here this afternoon.

“During the meeting, the new army chief expressed his gratitude for appointing him as the Chief of Army Staff. . . He sought the President’s cooperation in developing and modernising the Bangladesh Army,” President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.

Congratulating the new army chief, President Hamid hoped that the Bangladesh Army would move forward further under his leadership.

Noting that Bangladesh army, in the meantime, brightened its image at home and abroad, the President asked General Aziz to take necessary steps while discharging duties so that the army can uphold its dignity and efficiency worldwide in the days to come.

The President assured him of providing all out cooperation.

Earlier, a day after taking over the charge as the Army Chief, Aziz Ahmed was adorned with the rank badge of General in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban here this morning. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat adorned the new army chief with the rank badge of General.

Earlier on June 18, the government appointed Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army Lt Gen Aziz Ahmed as the new army chief.

“Bangladesh Army’s BA-2424 Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed, BGBM, PBGM, BGBMS, PSC, G, Quarter Master General has been appointed as new chief of Bangladesh Army from June 25 afternoon,” a defence ministry gazette notification said on June 18.

Aziz Ahmed also served as the director general (DG) of BGB from December 5, 2012, to November 16, 2016.

Secretaries concerned to the President, high civil and military officials were present.
