DHAKA, June 26, 2018 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda today said a feasibility study on Vannamei shrimp farming will be carried out in the country soon.

“We will take measures to farm this particular shrimp species on an experimental basis alongside Baghda, so that we can compete with other shrimp producing countries,” he said.

Chanda was speaking at a seminar on increasing shrimp farming and removing relevant obstacles at Hotel Purbani in the capital. Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) and BPC jointly organized the seminar.

Expressing his concern over the fall in shrimp farming, the minister said it is necessary for the nation to make progress in the sector as Bangladesh earns foreign currencies by exporting shrimp.

“We have already achieved self-sufficiency in milk production, we have to attain the same goal in egg production as well,” Chanda added.

Presided over by BFFEA president Amil Ullah, the seminar was also addressed by Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khalek, Cox’s Bazar-2 lawmaker Ashek Ullah Rafik and Shipping Secretary Abdus Samad, among others.
