CCCI demands issuing of IP from Chattogram office of PQW

DHAKA, June 25, 2018 (BSS) – Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(CCCI) has urged the agriculture ministry to issue Import Permit (IP) from
the Chattogram office of Plant Quarantine Wing (PQW) to facilitate import of
food grains.

CCCI sent a letter to agriculture minister Begum Matia Chowdhury requesting
her for taking necessary steps in this regard, said a CCCI media release
today.

“IP was issued from Chattogram since 2002 but as per the rules-2018 of PQW,
instruction has been given to issue IP from Department of Agricultural
Extension (DAE) in Dhaka which will create problem for the importers of
greater Chottagram,” said CCCI president Mahbubul Salam in the letter.

It is mandatory for importers to take IP before opening Letter of Credit
(LC) for the import of food grains such as rice, wheat, maize, oil seeds,
spices, fresh and dry fruits. Importers of Chattogram collect IP from PQW’s
Chattogram office but now they will have to collect it from PQW’s Dhaka
office which will be time consuming and costly.

“The new instruction will create bureaucratic complication and hamper
import of food grains that ultimately affects revenue collection,” said the
CCCI.
