DU to celebrate 99th founding anniversary in limited scale

DHAKA, June 30, 2020 (BSS) – Dhaka University (DU) is going to celebrate its 99th founding anniversary tomorrow in a limited scale due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programmes include: rendering national anthem and hoisting of the national flag as well as DU flag and releasing of pigeons on the premises of Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.

A discussion will also be held through virtual platform from the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom with university’s Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

National Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam will present a keynote speech in the discussion titled ‘Dhaka University in the Centenary Context: Movement and Struggle’.

Pro-VCs of the university, treasurer, two former VCs, two deans, two provosts, one registered graduate, presidents of DU Alumni Association (DUAA) and DU Teacher’s Association (DUTA) will join the discussion.

The day is being observed to mark the launching of academic activities by the university on July 1, 1921.

The university has grown to accommodate over 43,385 students and 2,010 teachers in 84 departments and 13 institutes presently.

The DU has played a vital role in the country’s history. Its students and teachers have sacrificed their lives in the Language Movement in 1952, the Mass Upsurge in 1969 and the Liberation War in 1975.
