Workshop on ‘Covering COVID-19’ for youth journalists at DU

DHAKA, JUNE 29, 2020 – The opening ceremony of two workshops for youth journalists tilted `Covering COVID-19: Media Training for Youth Journalists in Bangladesh’ will be held tomorrow.

A total of 92 correspondents from 15 universities will participate in the workshops, scheduled for July 8-10 and July 27-29 using Zoom platform, said a press release.

Micro governance Research Initiative (MGR) and Faculty of Social Sciences of Dhaka University are jointly organising the online workshops with the support of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and UKAID.

The workshop will start with a general session on covering COVID-19: media literacy essentials and training for youth journalist on June 30. Secretary General of EAVI Paolo Celot and IFES Regional Director for Asia-Pacific Vasu Mohan will address the opening session.

Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim, Dean of Social Sciences and former Information Commissioner will inaugurate the training session tomorrow at 7:00pm.

The training will cover issues of misinformation, hate speech, fact-checking and inclusive journalism on how to cover vulnerable communities, including women and person with disabilities, said Aynul Islam, Moderator of the workshops also Associate Professor of DU Political Science Department.

Internationally renowned resource persons and media experts will be joining as trainer in different sessions.

The speakers include Secretary General of EAVI, Belgium Paolo Celot, Asia-Pacific Regional Director of IFES Vasu Mohan, IFES Deputy Country Director for Sri Lanka Lasanthi Daskon, Dr. Shameem Reza from the DU Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and Health Journalist and Special Correspondent of Prothom Alo Shishir Morol.
