DHAKA, Jun 29, 2020 (BSS) – Deputy Leader of the parliament Golam Mohammad Quader today said the proposed budget implementation likely to be challenging as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created an impact on the economy.

“The proposed budget for 2020-21 is challenging as the revenue target in the proposed budget has been set more compare to the previous budget without taking the vulnerable economic situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic into account”, he said in the budget discussion held in the Jatiya Sangsad with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Participating in the budget discussion, the opposition leader said the income in the proposed budget is inadequate and uncertain, but the expenditure is huge which has created an imbalance situation at all.

“It is obvious that the revenue and other income has definitely reduce, on the other hand, the expenditure in the health sector is huge due to corona crisis, rising of poverty, huge investment in agriculture sector would create a challenge on the way of budget implementation”, he added.

Terming the budget as a huge deficit budget, the Jatiya Party Chairman said the proposed budget has a deficit of Taka 1,90,000 crore which is Taka 45,000 crore more than the budget placed last year.

On June 11, Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed a Taka 5,68,000 crore national budget for 2020-21 fiscal year at the Jatiya Sangsad with a target of attaining 8.2 percent GDP growth through continuing the momentum of the economy with all required economic activities after tackling the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, the lawmakers paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and recalled the people who had died in COVID-19 pandemic.
