Country’s position in curbing human trafficking elevated: Imran
DHAKA, June 27, 2020 (BSS) – The government’s time-befitting steps guaranteed Bangladesh’s attainment of an elevated status compared to that of last year in a global ranking of countries with human trafficking records under a US State Department’s annual study revealed on Friday, said the expatriates’ welfare minister.
According to the study report in a generally three-tier ranking system, Bangladesh has been upgraded to ‘Tier-2’ from a “watch list” in one year as Dhaka demonstrated increased efforts in curbing illegal migration abroad.
“It has been achieved because of honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s able leadership and time-befitting directives to this end,” Expatriates’ Welfare Minister and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad said this in a statement today.
About the US State Department’s acknowledgment, he said cancelling of license of recruiting agencies for illegal activities and countrywide publicity over safe migration by the government and the endeavors of the law enforcement agencies played an important role to attain it.
Extending thanks to the prime minister, Imran said the government has taken a zero tolerance stance against the heinous acts like human trafficking.
He said combined efforts of the ministries, including expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment, foreign, home and law; and all law enforcement agencies, different development associates, including International Organization for Migration (IOM), civil society members concerned with migration and media have brought the attainment and extended gratitude to all.
Seeking continued cooperation from all, the minister expressed his firmness to continue the united efforts in a more reinforced way to have further better position.
He also reaffirmed his ministry’s stance to remove the prevailing setbacks in elimination of human trafficking following the suggestions and observations of the US State Department to ensure safe migration.
