Earthquake of 5.8 magnitude jolts Chattogram and Sylhet

DHAKA, June 22, 2020 (BSS) – An earthquake of moderate magnitude jolted Chattogram and Sylhet on Monday.

Meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) Md Abdul Mannan told BSS that the quake was felt at 93.24 longitude and 5.8 degree on Richter scale at 4:42:52 am today.

The quake was also felt near the border with India and Myanmar, said the official.

Sheikh Farid Ahmed, meteorologist in charge of the Patenga Meteorological Office in Chattogram, said that after analyzing the seismic data of the US Geological Survey (USGS), it was found to be 5.8 on the Richter scale, which is more than the magnitude of the afternoon earthquake.

Like the previous one, this one also originated in Mizoram of India which is nearer to Chattogram in Bangladesh and Chattogram Hill Tracts.

Earlier, on Sunday (June 21) at 4:46 pm in Bangladesh, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude shook the eastern part of the country including Chattogram and the Indian state of Mizoram.

It originated 24 km away from Darlawn, a populous town in Mizoram’s Aizawl district.

The earthquake of 5.0 on Thursday (18 June) also originated from Mizoram.

The USGS said the epicenter of the quake was 38.5 km south-east of Darlawn in Mizoram, at a depth of 40.4 km inside of the earth.

The area is 213 km north-east of Chattogram in Bangladesh, and 40 km north-west of Aizawl district of Mizoram.

The quake affected Chattogram, three hill districts and other eastern districts of the country.
