Tree plantation mandatory in economic zones: Paban

DHAKA, June 24, 2018 (BSS)-Tree plantation will be made mandatory for industrial units to be set up in the country’s economic zones to protect environment, said Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury.

“We want to make equal focus on economic development and environment protection. So, planting of trees will be made mandatory for each industrial unit in the economic zone,” he said while speaking at a coordination meeting for planting 20 lakh trees in economic zones at BEZA office here today.

“At least 5 percent land of an industrial unit will have to be used for tree plantation,” he added.

Chowdhury said BEZA has a plan to plant 20 lakh trees in economic zones in the next five years. These trees will be planted on roads, embankments and other selected areas of the economic zones, he said, adding that initiatives have been taken to set up two plant museums on 500 acres of land in Mirsarai economic zones 1000 acres of land in Sonadia economic zone.

Mentioning the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the BEZA chairman said each economic zone will have water reservoir. Mirsarai economic zone will have a water reservoir on 2000 acres of land, he added.
