Local body representatives suspended for irregularities, nepotism

DHAKA, June 17, 2020 (BSS) –The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives has suspended a chairman and ten union parishad members across the country for irregularities in compiling lists of beneficiaries for the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s mobile banking cash assistance and embezzling rice allotted for the poorest of the poor.

A circular in this regard was issued today by the local government department, said a press release.

The circular said, for irregularities and nepotism in making the lists of beneficiaries of the cash assistance program through mobile banking initiated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Md. Alam Miah, chairman of Mehari Union Parishad of Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria district was temporarily suspended.

Besides, Monirul Islam, a member of six no. ward of Kalardowaniya Union Parishad in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur district, Abul Kalam, a member of eight no. ward of the same upazila, Kanchan Mia , a member of five no. ward of eight no. Nahata Union Parishad of Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district, Md Mafizul Islam, a member of three no. ward in 4 no. Kumargata Union Parishad of Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh district, RaisUddin, a member of 8 no. ward of Razibpur Union Parishad of Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh district, Parvin Aktar, a member of Bambu Union Parishad of Sadar upazila of Jaipurhat district and Lokman Hossain, a member of 2 no. ward , Muslema Begam, a member of Gomostapur Union Parishad of Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabganj District and Md. Iqbal, a member of 4 no. ward in 6 no. Charking Union Parishad of Hatia upazila of Noakhali district have been sacked temporarily for embezzlement of rice allotted for the poor under the food-assistance program and irregularities in compiling the lists of beneficiaries.

According to the Local Government Act 2009, the Local Government Department suspended them temporarily for the irregularities committed by them, the release added.

Besides, a total of one hundred public representatives have been suspended since the outbreak of the corona virus. Among them 30 are UP chairmen, 64 are UP members, one is district council member, four are municipal councilors and one is upazila vice-chairman.
