President, PM call for planting more fruit trees

DHAKA, June 21, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today called upon all to plant more fruit trees across the country to meet the demand of food and nutrition and attain economic self-reliance.

They made the call in separate messages on the occasion of ‘National Fruit Tree Planting Fortnight’ from June 22 to July 6 and ‘National Fruit Exhibition’ from June 22 to 24.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said fruit is one of the major sources of nutrition.

“The climate of our country is very suitable for the cultivation of fruits,” he said.

The President underscored the need for enhancing the plantation of fruits especially native fruits at every cultivable land including at the yard of homes utilizing suitable atmosphere of the country.

It will help meet the demand of nutrition, create employment opportunity and further contribute to the economy, he added.

President Abdul Hamid said the country’s production of vegetables and fruits have increased a lot because of the government’s different initiatives in the field of agriculture.

The massive production of native fruits has been playing an important role to meet the demand of nutrition at the national level, he said.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the fruits and fruit bearing trees have been meeting the demand of food and nutrients and shelter since long.

“Our native fruits are very unique in taste and nutrition. The soil and climate of Bangladesh are suitable for fruit cultivation,” she said.

The Prime Minister said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of building a Sonar Bangla free from hunger and poverty.

“To metalize the dream of Bangabandhu, we always attach much importance to agriculture,” she added.

She urged all to plant more native fruit trees to ensure availability of fruits round the year.

The President and the Prime Minister also wished all-out success of the programmes of ‘National Fruit Tree Planting Fortnight’ and National Fruit Exhibition-2018.
