Murad mourns death of ex-MP Prof Adv Momtaz Begum

DHAKA, May 17, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Information Dr Md Murad Hassan today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Professor Advocate Mamtaz Begum, an organiser of the Liberation War and also chairman of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha.

In a condolence message, Murad prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

He recalled Mamtaz Begum’s contributions to the War of Liberation and said she was not only a successful politician, but also an enlightened person who led women’s participation in building the nation.

Wife of AL Advisory Council member and Chairman of Bar Council Executive Committee Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, Prof Mamtaz breathed her last at her capital’s Dhanmondi residence in the early hours of today. She was 74.

Mamtaz, also a freedom fighter and Begum Rokeya Padak winner, had been suffering from various physical ailments for a long time.

She participated in the Language Movement and the Six-point Movement and played an important role in the preparations for the Great War of liberation, including the 1969 Mass uprising.
