Valiant freedom fighter Mamtaz Begum laid to eternal rest

DHAKA, May 17, 2020 (BSS) – Valiant freedom fighter and Jatiyo Mohila
Sangstha Chairperson Mamtaz Begum was laid to eternal rest with state honour
at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in the city today.

A contingent of policemen offered her the guard of honour as the body
covered with the national flag was laid on the graveyard premises after a
namaj-e-janaza at Bhuter Gali (North Road) Boro Masjid at Dhanmondi here
after Zohr prayers.

Mamtaz, wife of Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and Chairman of
Bar Council Executive Committee Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, breathed her
last at her Dhanmondi residence in the city in the early hours of today at
the age of 74.

She had been suffering from various physical ailments for a long time,
family sources said.

She left behind her husband, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives and
well wishers to mourn her death.

Mamtaz Begum, also Begum Rokeya Padak winner, participated in the Language
Movement and the Six-point Movement and played an important role in the great
War of Liberation and the 1969 Mass Uprising.

After the Great War of Liberation, she served the ‘Bangladesh Women
Rehabilitation Board’ as its director which was founded by the Father of the
Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1972 for rehabilitating the women
who were injured and tortured during the Liberation War.
