UNSG stresses re-establishment of integrity to protect refugees

DHAKA, June 20, 2018 (BSS) – United Nations (UN) Secretary-General (SG)
António Guterres today stressed the need to re-establish integrity of the
international refugee protection regime.

Guterres made the request at a video message, on the occasion of the World
Refugee Day which is being observed today across the globe, said a press
release here today.

At present, more than 68 million people around the world are refugees or
internally displaced as a result of conflict or persecution, which is
equivalent to the population of the world’s 20th largest country, he said.

Last year, one person was displaced every two seconds around the world,
mostly, in poorer countries.

On World Refugee Day, Guterres urged all for be united and think about
what more can be done for them.

He said, “I am deeply concerned to see more and more situations where
refugees are not receiving the protection they need and to which they are
entitled.”

In today’s world, no community or country providing safe refuge to people
fleeing war or persecution should be alone and unsupported, he added.

This year, a Global Compact on Refugees will be presented to the UN
General Assembly which will offer a way forward and recognizes the
contributions that refugees make to the societies hosting them, said the
UNSG.
