Rice sale at Tk 10 per kg begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, April 5, 2020 (BSS) – Sale of rice at Taka 10 per kg for the
daily wage earners started in the district today to help them feed at cheap
rate under Special Open Market Sale (OMS) programme amid coronavirus outbreak
situation.

Food Department is implementing the programme here and 2000 daily wage
earners like day laborers, rickshaw pullers, van paddlers, transport workers,
restaurant workers, hawkers, tea stall owners, beggars and transgenders would
get rice at subsidized price through 5 dealers, said an official.

Each of them would purchase maximum 5 kgs of rice at Taka 50 a week, he
said adding that the dealers would be allowed to sell the rice at five spots-
Khankasharif, David companypara, Kalibaripara, Purbaparaand Sundarzanmore of
Gaibandha Municipality on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday in a week.

Today, the rice sale activity under the programme to the daily wage
earners here was launched through 5 selected dealers simultaneously.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin formally inaugurated the rice sale
activity under Special OMS programme on the ground Khankasharif Fazil
Madrasha of the town here in the morning around 10.30 am as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Abdul Matin said the government led by
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina adopted the programme for the daily wage earners
to help pass their days and nights without food problem at the coronavirus
crisis moment.

District Controller (DC)-Food Md. Zahirul Islam and Sadarupazila food
controller Mofakkharul Islam including the media men were present on the
occasion.

Talking to the BSS, DC-Food M. Zahirul Islam said the persons with
coronavirus symptoms have been prohibited to stand in the queue to purchase
rice under the programme.

In reply to a query, the DC-Food said a total of 6000 hand to mouth
people would get the facility in a week and the programme would continue
until receiving the further order from the higher authority.
