DHAKA, April 2, 2020 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of veteran politician, Awami League (AL) lawmaker and former land minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif.

In a condolence message, the prime minister said Shamsur Rahman, a five-time elected MP, served the country and nation throughout his life as a vanguard of ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“Returning home in 1981 after six-year exile, I had seen that Shamsur Rahman kept the flag of the Awami League flying in greater Pabna region as well as led all democratic movements and struggles from the front,” she recalled.

The premier said because of that, Shamsur Rahman and his family members had to endure inhuman torture and repression at that time.

“But he never deviated from the ideology of Bangabandhu and the Awami League,” she mentioned.

Describing Shamsur Rahman as a leader of the mass people and the grassroots, Sheikh Hasina said he always worked for socioeconomic development of the common people of his area.

“The country and nation have lost a valiant freedom fighter and dedicated politician, while the people of the region lost their beloved leader in his death,” she added.

The premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Shamsur Rahman Sherif, the parliament member from Pabna-4 constituency and the Pabna district AL president, breathed his last this morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital here at the age of 80.
