BNP favours finding mistakes instead of helping govt: Hasan

DHAKA, April 01, 2020 (BSS)- Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said BNP is looking for finding out mistakes of the government instead of helping it (government) to combat the coronavirus epidemic.

Replying to a question of the journalists about the proposal made by BNP to form a national committee for combating current coronavirus situation, the minister said “The aim of BNP is to find out mistakes of the government even if it does not have so. It’s (BNP) goal is not to help the government.”

He was addressing a view exchange meeting with leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union Of Journalists (DUJ) at the Awami League President’s political office at Dhanmondi in the capital.

AL office secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, its health and population affairs secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana and deputy office secretary Sayeem Khan were present on the occasion.

Exemplifying the neighboring India, Hasan, also the joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandhi welcomed her Prime Minister as he (Prime Minister) took various initiatives for combating coronavirus outbreak.

Sonia Gandhi also gave advices to the prime minister of her country and expressed her desire to help the PM overcome the crisis jointly, he said, regretting that BNP failed to do so.

Noting that the statement of BNP secretary general was not meant to extend their helping hands in dealing with the current crisis of the country, the minister said: “Their (BNP) objective is to find government’s faults.”

“We repeatedly said that they (BNP leaders) can work with us, there is no problem at all. We will welcome them. If they have any suggestion, they can offer us,” he said.

But BNP is trying to find out the flaws instead of standing by the people of the country in the current crisis, he said.

Despite prevalence of good situation in the country in comparison to other countries, the government is not sitting idle, he added.

At the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, the government is preparing itself for taking many pragmatic steps to face any untoward situation.

He expressed his optimism that the coronavirus epidemic could be prevented with the help of the affluent people and journalists of the country.

BFUJ president Molla Jalal, its secretary general Shaban Mahmud, DUJ president Quddus Afrad and its general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu handed over to the information minister a letter containing a number of demands on behalf of the journalists.
