CHATTOGRAM, June 13, 2018 (BSS)- Chattogram District Administration
continued an eviction drive in the hilly areas of the port city for the third
consecutive day today to avoid possible loss of lives from landslides.
A total of 556 unauthorised makeshifts were evicted from the hillocks of
Motizarna Pora Pahar (Lalkhan Bazar), Amin Colony, Tankir Pahar, Miar Pahar,
Khulsi Pahar, Akbarshah Pahar and its adjoining risky hills in the city since
Sunday.
A team, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Delwar Hossain, conducted
the eviction drive in association with the Department of Environment (DoE),
members of police and Ansar, and other departments concerned around 1 pm at
AK Khan Hill under Akbar Shah Police Station in the city.
The team started eviction of the residents of AK Khan Hill and evicted 25
unauthorised makeshifts from the hillocks of nine risky hills today.
The team also slashed the supply of electricity and water to the houses
during the drive to avoid possible loss of lives from landslides during
monsoon.
Assistant Commissioners (Land) of four separate circles Abdullah Al
Monsure, Sabrina Afrin Mostafa, Sabbir Rahman Sunny and Sharmin Akther were
present during the eviction drive on the slopes of nine different risky hills
around 11 am.
The district administration along with the DoE officials, WASA
representatives, police personnel, representatives of Chattogram City
Corporation (CCC), Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), Bangladesh
Railway, Fire Service and other departments concerned started the drive
around 10 am.
Earlier, the administration evicted 490 families on Sunday while 41
families on Monday from nine hills, including Akbarshah, Jalalabad, Motijorna
and Khulshi hills.
The district administration came up with the move aiming to avert possible
loss of lives from landslides in monsoon as the soil on the hills become
softer and may trigger landslides during the rainy season, posing threat to
the lives of the poor people dwelling on risky hill pockets.
After the eviction drive, Delwar Hossain told reporters said despite several
notices served from the district administration, the families were still
living on the risky hill slopes.
