BGB’s clarification over Khagrachhari incident claiming five lives

DHAKA, March 3, 2020 (BSS) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has issued a statement clarifying the incident of a clash between the paramilitary force and the villagers claiming at least five lives at Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari district at 11.45 am today.

“Civilians surrounded a BGB’s patrol team near Gazinagar Bazar at Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari district while the team took measures against timber smuggling, creating violent situation,” said the BGB statement here this evening.

As a consequence of provocative situation, one round blank firing by BGB and scuffling between the BGB members and civilians, the villagers took away the firearms of the paramilitary force and shoot randomly, it read.

Five people including one BGB member–soldier Md Shaon– were killed in the incident, the statement said, adding that BGB Guimara Sector Commander, Bangladesh Army Guimara Region Commander and Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Khagrachhari district visited the spot and started activities to conduct separate inquiry into the incident.

Necessary measures will be taken after the investigation, it said.
