EC to stay alert to bar Rohingyas becoming voters: Anisul

DHAKA, March 2, 2020 (BSS) – Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said the Election Commission (EC) should stay alert so that the Rohingyas can never be enrolled as voters adopting illegal means.

“The EC should be very much careful so that the Rohingyas or citizens from any other countries can never be registered as voters of the country,” he said this as the chief guest while attending a discussion on the occasion of the National Voter Day at Bangabandhu International Conference center here.

The minister stressed on enactment of a law entailing harsh punishment to curb such illegal activities, adding that the government is ready to extend its cooperation to this end.

On Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), the law minister said the present world is an age of technology, so desired development can’t be achieved without technology.

Anisul told the conference various countries in the world including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Russia, France, Japan, Australia, Peru, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) already have introduce the EVM, but some people in the country are opposing the system without having sufficient knowledge in this ground.

But the fact remains that there is no alternative to introduction of new EVM technology to fully eradicate the malpractice in voting process, the minister told the conference organized by the EC.

The conference was also addressed, among others, by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, M Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (retd) Shahadat Hossen Chowdhury with Senior Secretary of the EC M Alamgir in the chair.
