11 killed in Rangamati landslides

CHATTOGRAM, June 12, 2018 (BSS) – At least 11 people were killed in four
separate landslides at Naniarchar upazila of Rangamati district on Monday
night.

The landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall in Rangamati which countinued
for the last couple of days, local and divisional administration sources said.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid told BSS that the major
landslides took place at Boro Kul Para, Hati Mara, Siyalli Para and
Dharmacharan Karbari para at Naniarchar upazila early today.

Among the 11 deceased, four belonged to two families in Boro Kul Para area,
three of the same family from Hati Mara Dharmacharan Karbari neighborhood,
three Siyalli Para and one in Gilachhari.

The deceased in Boro Kul Para were identified as Surendra Lal Chakma, 52,
his wife Razzo Debi Chakma, 44, and their daughter Sonali Chakma, 10, and
their neighbor’s boy Rumen Chakma, 15.

The victims of Hati Mara area were – Rita Chakma, 28, and Riten Chakma, 26.
The victims of Siyalli Para were Fulo Debi Chakma, 31, Eti Chakma, 24 and a
two-month-old baby Joti Chakma.

Another deceased of Gilachhari para could not be identified, the DC added.

Abdullah Al Mamun, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Naniarchar and Hasan
Bin Mohammad Ali staff officer of divisional commissioner of Chattogram
confirmed the death toll in the landslides and casualties.

On this day last year, a landslide struck Rangamati killing over 120
people while none of them were from Naniarchar.
