RCC to transplant 7,000 tree saplings

RAJSHAHI, Aug 11, 2017 (BSS)- Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has set a target to transplant more than 7,000 fruit tree saplings all over the city during this season for protection of the ecological balance.

Under its Zero Soil Project, the corporation authority will transplant the trees along both sides of all the newly constructed footpaths and other existing roads.

Apart from, 200 saplings are being distributed among each of the 30 wards in order to infusing dynamism into the plantation activities.

Mayor of RCC Mosaddique Hossain Bulbul disclosed this while inaugurating the transplantation programme at Riverview School point in the city yesterday afternoon as chief guest.

Ward Councilors Belal Ahmed, Monsur Rahman and Sohrab Hossain, Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque, Superintending Engineer Khairul Bashar and Executive Engineer Noor Islam were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Bulbul said: “We have the Zero Soil project. Its target was to have no free or open dust-producing land in this city. The pavement on the side of the road is covered with tiles. Where there is no scope to use tiles here we planted grass.”

The project is not yet complete even, we learned, yet its aims are almost fulfilled. “The Padma River embankment is covered with massive tree plantation, hence leaving no scope to dust wind,” Bulbul said. He hopes the remaining work of the project ends smoothly then the city can become even cleaner.

Now most city-dwellers in the afternoon go to the Lalon Shah Park, part of a bustling riverside scene that is unthinkable in Dhaka, to take in some fresh air. Green trees line the road side. All of this makes a city of fresh air.

The corporation is constructing footpaths covering the open soil on roadsides, improving the drainage system, increasing mango orchards and beefing up the cleansing operations, the mayor said.

“Earlier, we planted more than 5,000 trees on 10-kilomter roads and encouraged citizens for building fruit orchards,” he added
