Residents evicted from Ctg hillocks
CHATTOGRAM, June 11, 2018 (BSS) – Chattogram district administration today
started eviction of residents of 490 unauthorised makeshift houses from the
hillocks in the city today.
The eviction team also snapped the supply of electricity and water to the
houses during the drive that started around 11am.
Four assistant commissioners (land) of four separate circles, Abdullah Al
Monsure of Sadar circle, Sabrina Afrin Mostafa of Bakalia circle, Sabbir
Rahman Sunny of Chandgaon circle and Sharmin Akther of Agrabad circle led the
eviction drive in the slopes of nine different risky hills.
The district administration along with the Department of Environment
(DoE), WASA representatives, police personnel, representatives of Chattogram
city corporation, Chattogram Development Authority, Bangladesh Railway, fire
service and electricity departments and other departments concerned started
the drive around 10 am, Abdullah Al Monsure said.
They evicted 490 families from nine hills including Akbarshah, Jalalabad,
Motijorna and Khulshi hills.
Residents of illegal dwellers alleged that the administration started
the eviction drive this morning without issuing any notice.
However, Sabrina Afrin Mostafa, AC land of Bakalia circle, told
journalists that they asked people to leave the area using loudspeaker
yesterday.
The district administration came up with the move in order to avert
possible loss of lives from landslides in the upcoming monsoon as the soil on
hills become softer and may trigger a landslide, posing threat to the lives
of the poor people dwelling on those risky hills pockets during the rainy
season.
Sharmin Akther, AC land of Agrabad circle, after the eviction drive, told
journalists that despite several notices served from the district
administration, the families were still living in the hills at very dangerous
state.
Sabbir Rahman Sunny, AC land of Chandgaon circle said the authorities
would gradually evict all families living in different risky hills in the
city.
