‘Shaheed Dibash’ observed in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Feb 21, 2020 (BSS) – The ‘Shaheed Dibash and the International Mother Language Day-2020′ was observed paying rich tributes to the Language Movement martyrs in the city and the district as elsewhere in the country
today.

Thousands of people of all ages participated in the daylong programmes
since midnight for observing the day with a fresh pledge to ensure use of
Bengali at all levels.

Under management of Rangpur City Corporation and the district
administration, the observance began at one minute past after midnight with
placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city amid tight security
measures.

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, Divisional Commissioner KM
Tariqul Islam, Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range of Bangladesh
Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad
Abdul Alim Mahmud first placed there wreaths paying homage to the Language
Movement Martyrs.

Later, District Council Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Deputy
Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan and Superintendent of Police Biplob Kumar Sarkar
with senior officials and President of district Awami League (AL) Mamtaz
Uddin Ahmed with other leaders placed wreaths.

Local leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, AL and its associate
bodies, BNP, Jatiya Party, JaSoD, CPB, BSD, Workers’ Party, Ganatantry Party
and other political parties, heads of different government departments and
non-government organizations, educational institutions, NGOs and professional
organisations and common people also placed wreaths there to pay homage to
the Language Movement martyrs.

Earlier in the morning, hundreds of people in bare feet and wearing black
badges took part in ‘probhat ferries’ singing song ‘Amar Bhayer Rakte Rangano
Ekushey February—– Ami Ki Bhulite Pari—-‘ to the Central Shaheed Minar
before placing wreaths there.

The divisional, district and police administrations, socio-cultural and
professional organisations, political parties, private bodies and
institutions chalked out programmes to observe the day.

The programmes included hoisting of the national flag at half-mast at
district AL office and atop government and private buildings and educational
institutions, decoration of the city streets with miniature national and
coloured-flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets.

The language movement veterans were accorded receptions and special
prayers offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of
religious worship.

A poem festival on the language movement, War of Liberation and
Bangabandhu, screening of documentary films, competitions for children on
drawing, essay writing, handwriting and patriotic songs and sports for
underprivileged children were arranged.

Besides, discussions and cultural functions were organised and the local
daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, online and others newspapers published
special issues and Rangpur Betar Kendra aired special programmes narrating
significance of the day.

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur Medical College, Carmichael College,
Rangpur Government College and other educational institutions also observed
the day through daylong programmes.
