Int’l Mother Language Day observed at JU

SAVAR, Feb 21, 2020 (BSS) – The authorities of Jahangirnagar University
(JU) today observed the Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day
with due respect and in a befitting manner on the campus.

Marking the day, teachers, students and officials of the university paid
glowing tributes to the martyrs, valiant sons of the soil who made supreme
sacrifices to establish the rights of the mother tongue, of the language
movement in 1952.

The day has been observed around the world as the UNESCO recognised it as
“International Mother Language Day” on November 17, 1999.

JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Farzana Islam placed floral wreaths at
the altar of the university’s Central Shaheed Minar on Friday at one minute
past midnight tonight.

During the period, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Amir Hossain, Pro-VC
(Education) Prof Dr Nurul Alam, Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq and
Registrar Rahima Kaneez were accompanied her, among others.

Later, Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA), Jahangirnagar
University Journalists’ Association (JUJA), JU Women’s Club, Employees
Association, Employees Union, dormitories authorities, the leaders of
different political student organisations and different socio-cultural
organisations also placed wreaths separately at the altar of the Shaheed
Minar.

Besides, the teachers and officials of the university brought out a morning
procession (Provat Feri) around 6.30 am that started from Officers Club to
the Central Shaheed Minar of the university. Students and teachers of
Jahangirnagar University School and College along with various cultural
organisations participated at the rally.

Besides, various schools and institutions of Savar area came to the Shaheed
Minar and paid their tributes to the martyrs of the language movement.

Meanwhile, the university authorities also organised different programmes
on the campus to mark the day. On Thursday evening, Teacher-Student Center
(TSC) of JU organised a cultural programme at the Shaheed Minar Premises.

Prof Farzana Islam addressed the function as the chief guest while
Director of JU Teacher-Student Center Prof Dr. Alamgir Kabir, Treasurer
Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, Acting Registrar Rahima Kaneez and President of JUTA
Prof Dr AA Mamun were present, among others.

Marking the day, the national flag is hoisted at half-mast at all
administrative buildings and halls of the university to show respect to the
language martyrs.
