Ensuring good governance to alleviate poverty stressed

DHAKA, June 11, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a national dialogue on budget allocation in social protection sector today called for ensuring good governance to alleviate poverty in the country.

They came up with the call at the national dialogue on “Proposed Budget 2018-19: Expectations of Poor People and Social Safety Net Programme” organized by All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) at the conference room of Minister’s Hostel of Jatiya Sangsad.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance Ministry Dr Abdur Razzak addressed the dialogue as the chief guest with APPG President Md Israfil Alam in the chair.

Lawmakers Fakhrul Imam, Meer Mostaq Ahmed Robi, Abdul Wadud, Najmul Khan Pradhan, Advocate Sanjida Khanam, Firoza Begum Chinu and Selina Jahan Lita, among others, addressed it. APPG Secretary General Conducted the dialogue while its senior policy adviser TIM Jahid Hossain presented the keynote paper on the occasion.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken different project including Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar and Ashrayan for permanent alleviation of poverty. Poverty has been alleviated in the country because of the government’s such project,” Dr Abdur Razzak told the dialogue.

He said agriculture activities are now being conducted through machines which causes employment crisis of laborer of this sector.

Razzak underscored the need for imparting vocational and technical trainings to the workers in manufacturing sector to make them skilled workforce.

“Good governance must be ensured to alleviate poverty. Because of middlemen, beneficiaries of social safety net programme cannot get proper facilities,” Fakhrul Imam said.

He also stressed on reaching the allowances of Social Safety Net programme to its beneficiaries directly to make the programme more successful one in alleviating poverty.
