Medieval age poet and sage Heyat fondly recalled in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Feb 18, 2020 (BSS) – Academics and literary personalities at a
discussion today said spiritual poet of the medieval period poet Kazi Heyat
Mamud was a great sage of knowledge and outstandingly contributed to Bengali
literature through his literary works.

The district administration organised the discussion in observance of the
death anniversary of the poet on Jharbishla Hayatul Ulum Alim Madrasa
premises at his native Jharbishla village in Pirganj upazila of the district.

The death anniversary of Heyat is being officially observed since 2004 on
this day when hundreds of his followers gather at Jharbishla village to
celebrate his annual ‘Urs Mubarak’ for centuries together.

The district administration arranged ‘Qur’an Khwani`, ‘Mazar Ziarat’, and
milad mahfil, recitation of Hamd and Naats and essay competitions for
students and prize distribution function.

Presided over by Pirganj municipal Mayor and General Secretary of Pirganj
upazila Awami League Abu Saleh Md. Tazimul Islam Shameem, Pirganj Upazila
Nirbahi Officer TMA Momin attended the discussion as chief guest.

Senior District Information Officer Md. Humayun Kobir, Pirganj Upazila
Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Md. Sadekuzzaman Sarker and Upazila
Secondary Education Officer Md. Abdul Momin Mandal addressed as special

Former head of Bengali Department of Government Begum Rokeya College,
Rangpur Professor Mohammad Shah Alam delivered the keynote paper on ‘The art
value, spiritual thought and social picture of literary works of poet Kazi
Heyat Mamud’.

Principal of Jharbishla Hayatul Ulum Alim Madrasa Abdus Salek Sarker and
family member Sadiya Afrin (eighth descendants) of Kazi Heyat Mamud
participated as discussants.

Professor Alam in his main paper discussed various aspects of the literary
works of poet Heyat Mamud and said that those works still bear important
values for the present and future of the civilized humanity.

“The poet contributed immensely to Bengali literature and humanism of that
time through his famous spiritual literary works like ‘Jongonama or Moharram
Porbo’, ‘Sorboved Bani’, ‘Hitgyan Bani’ and ‘Ambia Bani’,” Alam added.

Sadiya Afrin said the ideas expressed by Kobi Heyat through literary works
helped enriching modern Bengali literature.

The chief guest stressed on nurturing precious literary works of spiritual
poet Heyat Mamud and preserving those as rich ancestral heritage to build a
knowledge-based enlightened society.
