DBM for progressive taxation system

DHAKA, June 10, 2018 (BSS)-Stressing the need for introducing a progressive taxation system, Democratic Budget Movement (DBM) today said such a taxation system would help reduce pressure on the general taxpayers.

The DBM leaders said the government should emphasize on indirect tax rather than direct tax to reduce tax burden on the people.

They came up with the suggestions while exchanging views with members of Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) on the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2018-19 (FY19) here.

DBM president Dr Protima Paul Majumder presided over the meeting, MM Akash of Dhaka University, chief executive officer of BUILD Ferdous Ara Begum, president of health rightsa movement Dr Rashid-e-Mahbub, DBM general secretary A R Aman, ERF president Saif Islam Dilal and its vice president Salauddin Lablu, among others, took part in the discussion.

DBM research secretary Manwar Mostafa presented the keynote paper.

Criticizing the government to slash corporate tax for banks, MM Akash said the government should lower corporate tax for the sectors that create jobs for the young people.

He suggested the government to lay emphasis on technical education and small and medium industries for creating more jobs in the country.

Ferdous Ara Begum suggested immediate introduction of ‘One Stop Service’ soon for expansion of investments in the country.

Manwar Mostafa suggested withdrawal 5 percent VAT on ride sharing UBER and Pathao.
